Psychotherapy Practice Biography - Joel G. Thomas, PhD
Who are you? How has your life lead you to this moment? These are some of the questions I believe are key in the journey of self-discovery and personal growth. I see therapy as a collaborative space where we can explore our past as it impacts our present. In this process, it is possible to heal those emotional wounds that may be limiting us or causing us undue suffering.
While many therapists and therapies focus on reducing symptoms, my approach is to view symptoms as indicators of deeper parts of us that need to be attended to, explored, and healed. Oftentimes this holistic approach to therapy involves noticing and working with longstanding maladaptive relational patterns in a new and more flexible way. By looking at these parts of ourselves in the context of a trusting and empathic therapeutic relationship, we can uncover past pain to better understand ourselves. Symptoms typically remit as we engage in the process of discovery of our authentic self. This process of self-discovery can also lead to a greater sense of agency, wholeness, and purpose in life.
I am a clinical psychologist in the Atlanta area who works with adults and adolescents (ages 16 and up) experiencing a range of challenges including depression, anxiety, troubles with attention, self-image issues, traumatic experiences, existential concerns, and relationship struggles. I seek to be sensitive and aware of cultural difference in my work with clients and hope to empower them not only as individuals but also in relation to their families and the communities they care about. In addition to my part time practice, I am a professor of psychology who teaches counselors in training. Please feel free to contact me for a consultation at 404-471-5362 or jthomas@agnesscott.edu.
